La NASA ha utilizado un dise\u00f1o similar de generador de radiois\u00f3topos desde la d\u00e9cada de 1960 para alimentar sat\u00e9lites distantes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La bater\u00eda betavoltaica utiliza carbono-14, una forma inestable y radiactiva del carbono, llamada radiocarbono. Genera energ\u00eda aprovechando part\u00edculas de alta energ\u00eda llamadas part\u00edculas beta (tambi\u00e9n conocidas como rayos beta), emitidas por el radiocarbono. Estas part\u00edculas beta inciden en un semiconductor, lo que produce electricidad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El profesor decidi\u00f3 usar radiocarbono porque genera \u00fanicamente rayos beta, que pueden ser protegidos de forma f\u00e1cil y segura por muchos materiales, incluso con una fina l\u00e1mina de aluminio. El radiocarbono es econ\u00f3mico, f\u00e1cil de conseguir (un subproducto de las centrales nucleares) y f\u00e1cil de reciclar.
